Review by Bruce Lee Gallanter (Downtown Music Gallery)
LEAP OF FAITH [PEK/GLYNIS LOMON et al] - Unified Fields (Evil Clown 03; USA) One long piece features: PEK [David Peck]- clarinets, saxes, bassoon; Glynis Lomon - cello, voice; Craig Schildhauer - bass and Sydney Smart - percussion, while the other piece features Pek & Lomon with James Coleman on theremin and Yuri Zbitnov on percussion. The core of Leap of Faith is the trio of David Peck, Glynis Lomon and Craig Schildhauer. One of two percussionists (Syd Smart or Yuri Zbitnov) are added often on different pieces. The two long pieces which make up this disc were recorded in October of 1997 and August of 2000 in the Cambridge, MA area. The only names here you should be familiar with are cellist Ms. Glynis Lomon who has worked with Bill Dixon in recent times and drummer Sydney Smart who has recorded with Jimmy Lyons, Raphe Malik and Frank Wright. You might also recognize James Coleman from BSC, part of the Boston music underground.
I get the feeling that most of the dozen Leap of Faith discs are minimally edited and taken from longer sessions. The title piece is nearly 37 minutes long and features the quartet (Pek, Lomon, Schildhauer & Smart). David Peck plays clarinets, saxes & bassoon while Ms. Lomon plays cello. Both are strong improvisers who push and pull, working well with the bass and drums, who know when to lay back and let reeds and cello take over. On rare occasion, Ms. Lomon provides some strange vocals which only add to the spirited improv. There are moments when both the cello and acoustic bass are bowed together in a frenzy of intense activity that is nearly over-the top with the rest of the quartet erupting powerfully together. Theremin player James Coleman adds his own odd sounds to a different quartet on the second piece with Pek, Ms. Lomon and drummer Yuri Zbirnov. Long but engaging throughout. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

Pure improv with little or no planning prior to performance ... more
