  Leap of Faith is the core duet of the Leap of Faith Orchestra (LOFO) comprised of PEK on clarinets, saxophones, double reeds & flutes, and Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonic & voice. The ensemble is based in Boston and dates back to the early 90s. We utilize a huge arsenal of additional Evil Clown instruments to improvise long works featuring transformations across highly varied sonorities. At times, the core unit has been a trio or even a quartet. The longest running core unit was comprised of PEK, Glynis and drummer Yuri Zbitnov, who played for the last couple of years of the archival period and the first 5 years of the reboot starting in 2015. The ensemble has always been highly modular, and our many recordings (well over 100) feature the core unit in dozens of configurations with a huge list of guests and occasionally as only the core unit with no guests. Currently, the core unit is the duet of PEK and Lomon and we are regularly presenting LIVESTREAMs to YouTube from Evil Clown Headquarters with other guest performers.

  Newbie Chris Alford makes his second Evil Clown appearance on this session. He lives in New Orleans, but his wife is originally from the Boston area. They were in town for about a month and Albey onBass reached out asking if he could join in on Transmutations (the last Leap of Faith set from last week). Albey, and generally everyone, is welcome to suggest players for the roster, so I immediately agreed! Albey was originally scheduled to be the second bass player on this set, and when we were discussing Transmutations, I pulled Chris into this second Leap of Faith recording. Chris is a great and very well-credentialed guitar player and I told him to let me know whenever he is in the area so we can get him in on future sets.

  The Evil Clown Roster includes several amazing bass players, but all are very busy as one would expect. So, I’m always looking for more bass players (and orchestral string players, generally). A while back, when I was seeking a sub for a different set, Evil Clown regular saxophonist Mike Caglianone suggested Steve Skop and arranged an introduction. When we first corresponded Steve was quite enthusiastic, but as usual very busy, so it took a minute to get him on the schedule. This marks his first performance, and he did a great job! He plays double bass with an extra low string which really filled out the bottom end on this set, joining with the [d]ronin, 17 string bass, contrabass clarinet and bass saxophone played by myself and others.

  This set demonstrates a key concept of Leap of Faith – the core unit with guests. Glynis, Bob and I have played many times together over the years and particularly in the last few years at Evil Clown Headquarters utilizing the Arsenal of auxiliary instruments. With such a solid core, it is easy for seasoned improvisors like Chris and Steve to join in and create deep improvisations which leverage the resources of instrumentation and personnel to create the unique and fascinating sound world of this particular Leap of Faith performance.
